Chennai Super Kings could see a familiar face back at the helm as Ruturaj Gaikwad battles elbow injury ahead of Delhi Capitals fixture
Ruturaj Gaikwad, the current captain of Chennai Super Kings, is in doubt for the IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals on Saturday after picking up an elbow injury during CSK’s last outing against Rajasthan Royals. With his participation uncertain, MS Dhoni is expected to step in as captain if Gaikwad is ruled out.
The opener was struck on his unguarded elbow by a rising delivery from Tushar Deshpande early in the chase during CSK’s defeat to Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. Though initial signs weren’t alarming, the soreness has lingered through the week.
Michael Hussey, CSK’s batting coach, addressed the media ahead of the Delhi clash.
“We’re hopeful Ruturaj will try batting in training today. The elbow is still a bit sore, but improving every day,” Hussey said. “We’re hopeful he’ll be okay for tomorrow.”
While Hussey didn’t confirm any captaincy plans, there are strong indications that MS Dhoni could return to lead CSK if Gaikwad is unavailable.
“I haven’t thought about it too much. I’m sure Stephen [Fleming] and Rutu have. We’ve got a young guy behind the stumps with experience – maybe he can do it,” Hussey added in a teasing nod to Dhoni.
Dhoni led CSK from 2008 till 2023 – barring a brief, unsuccessful handover to Ravindra Jadeja in 2022. He captained CSK to their fifth title in 2023 and passed the baton to Gaikwad for IPL 2024.
If Gaikwad does sit out, CSK will not only miss his captaincy but also his consistent top-order presence. The team will look to bounce back at their fortress Chepauk after their stumble against the Royals.
Chennai will hope that their captain returns to the playing eleven and CSK get back to winning ways.
