In a significant blow to Bangladesh’s campaign in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, their skipper, Shakib Al Hasan, has been ruled out of the tournament due to a fractured left index finger. Shakib sustained this injury while batting during Bangladesh‘s penultimate league stage game against Sri Lanka in Delhi on November 6, 2023.
Photographs and video clips from the match showed Shakib’s gritty innings where he played a match-winning knock of 82 from 65 balls, comprising 12 fours and two sixes. He also contributed with the ball, taking figures of 2/57 in a tense clash, earning him the Player of the Match award.
However, the heroics came at a cost, as Shakib revealed that he had been struck on his left index finger early in his innings. Despite the discomfort, he continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. After the game, an emergency X-ray in Delhi confirmed a fracture on the left PIP joint of his finger.
The injury has forced Shakib Al Hasan to withdraw from the tournament, with a recovery period estimated at three to four weeks. He will return to Bangladesh for rehabilitation, putting an end to his campaign in the World Cup.
This development is a significant setback for Bangladesh, as Shakib Al Hasan is not only their captain but also a key all-rounder who plays a pivotal role in their team’s performance. His absence will be deeply felt as Bangladesh prepares for their last match of the tournament against Australia in Pune on November 11, 2023.
As Bangladesh looks to continue their World Cup journey, they will have to do so without their influential leader, Shakib Al Hasan, who will be dearly missed on the field.
