New Zealand’s star pacer Matt Henry has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against India after failing a last-minute fitness test. Henry, who has been one of the tournament’s best bowlers, sustained a shoulder injury during the semi-final against South Africa and could not recover in time for the final.
Despite undergoing rigorous fitness drills before the toss, Henry failed to regain full match fitness and was visibly devastated after learning he wouldn’t play. He was seen in tears as the team decided to go with medium-pacer Nathan Smith as his replacement for this crucial clash.
The 33-year-old fast bowler, who has taken 10 wickets in four matches, suffered a shoulder injury while attempting a catch in the semi-final. Though he continued playing in that match, his discomfort raised concerns about his availability for the final.
New Zealand’s Last-Minute Fitness Test for Henry
The team management assessed him on Saturday after a training session.
On match day, Henry attempted a warm-up session, rolling his arm over and doing some bowling drills.
He looked uncomfortable and was unable to bowl at his usual intensity.
Eventually, the team decided not to risk him in the final.
Henry’s absence is a major setback for New Zealand, as he was leading their bowling attack throughout the tournament.
With Matt Henry ruled out, New Zealand has brought in Nathan Smith as his replacement. The 26-year-old medium-pacer adds depth to the bowling attack but lacks the experience and firepower that Henry brought to the team.
New Zealand opted to bat first after winning the toss, hoping to put runs on the board on a good batting surface.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner addressed Henry’s unfortunate injury after winning the toss:
“Unfortunately, Matt Henry has been ruled out. We’ve got Nathan Smith coming in. He tried his best to get fit, but we didn’t want to take the risk. It’s disappointing for him and the team, but we back our squad to deliver.”
