The first half of the Champions Trophy 2025 final has not been very good for the Indian cricket team especially when the fielding is concerned. The fielders had butter fingers, and they dropped at least four catches in the all important clash against New Zealand.
Rohit Sharma once again lost the toss and India had to field first at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. During the seventh over of New Zealand innings, India dropped the first catch. Mohammed Shami failed to hold onto the ball on the follow-through. He also hurt himself as Rachin Ravindra hit it straight towards him. Shami tried to grab it with both hands but failed to get a hold.
Shreyas Iyer also dropped another catch of Ravindra in the eighth over. It was tricky as Shreyas had to cover some distance to grab the ball. He tried but eventually failed and Ravindra got another life. The Kiwi opener finally was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for 38 in the 11th over.
The third catch was dropped by the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. Rohit dropped Daryll Mtchell when he was batting on 38. Rohit jumped for the ball but could not catch it at mid-wicket. Mitchell went on to score 63 and took New Zealand score beyond 200. Shubman Gill was next to drop a catch in the next over. He gave a life to Glenn Philip and looked upset after dropping an easy catch at the mid-wicket. Thankfully, Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Philip after a couple of overs for 34.
Meanwhile, India have dropped a total of nine catches in the Champions Trophy so far. This is the most by any team in the tournament. Indians also have the third lowest catch efficiency rate in the tournament with 70 per cent, with Pakistan (60) and Bangladesh (66.6) following them in the tally.
