Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials disclosed on Wednesday that renowned all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will undergo conservative treatment for an eye condition, signalling concerns about his visual functioning.
Shakib, currently representing Rangpur Riders in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), departed for Singapore following their opening game due to a recurring eye problem. The issue had troubled him during the last ICC World Cup in India, resurfacing to cause discomfort during the BPL.
BCB’s senior physician, Debashish Chowdhury, revealed that Shakib has been diagnosed with Extrafoveal Central Serous Chorioretinopathy (CSR) of the left eye. Addressing the condition affecting the retina, Chowdhury stated, “It has been decided that a conservative approach will be adopted for managing the issue for now.” The medical team overseeing Shakib’s case is optimistic about effectively managing the condition through conservative treatment.
The BCB issued a press release urging respect for Shakib’s privacy as he focuses on his health and recovery. Further updates on his condition will be provided in due course, ensuring fans and the cricketing fraternity stay informed about the star player’s well-being.
While Shakib is not ruled out from the remainder of the 2024 BPL season, adjustments may be necessary for his participation. If he continues playing, it’s anticipated he might focus more on his bowling and play down the batting order to manage the discomfort associated with his eye problem. Riders officials express hope for Shakib’s availability but emphasize that his comfort is the priority.
In the event that conservative treatment doesn’t fully cure Shakib’s condition, a lengthier procedure may be required, potentially leading to an extended absence from cricket. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will provide clarity on Shakib’s cricketing future.
As cricket enthusiasts await news of Shakib’s recovery, the BCB reassures fans that the talented all-rounder’s health is the foremost priority, and any decisions regarding his return to the field will be made with careful consideration.
