Indian all-rounder Shardul Thakur has paid a heartfelt tribute to his long-time Mumbai teammate, Dhawal Kulkarni, who is set to retire after the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 final between Mumbai and Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium.
Thakur, who has represented India in all three formats, credited Kulkarni for shaping his career and supporting him since a young age. Thakur shared a touching anecdote, revealing, “When I did not have money to buy the shoes, he gave me a few pairs of shoes also. So, he has helped me a lot.”
Reflecting on his journey, Thakur emphasized his love for playing in tough situations, attributing his resilience to the challenging circumstances he faced while growing up. He recalled the hardships of travelling from Palghar to Mumbai with his kit bag on the train, stating, “It was not easy. So, I think that has toughened me up. And whenever I face a tough situation, challenging situation, it’s no different. I just use that mindset that I had as a kid growing up.”
In the Ranji Trophy final, Thakur played a crucial role for Mumbai, rescuing the team from a difficult position with a brilliant knock of 75 runs off 69 balls. Mumbai managed to post a total of 224 in their first innings. Thakur also contributed with the ball, dismissing opener Dhruv Shorey.
Kulkarni, on the other hand, made his presence felt by picking up crucial wickets, helping Mumbai dominate the game. With Vidarbha being bowled out for just 105 in their first innings, Mumbai took a commanding position in the final.
Kulkarni, who replaced the injured Mohit Avasthi in the Mumbai playing XI for the final, received a guard of honor from his teammates as he stepped onto the field for the last time in his illustrious domestic career. Kulkarni has represented Mumbai in 95 first-class games, picking up 281 wickets. He also played 12 ODIs and two T20Is for India.
Thakur’s tribute to Kulkarni reflects the camaraderie and respect shared between teammates, highlighting the impact a mentor can have on a young cricketer’s career. As Kulkarni bids farewell to the game, his contributions to Mumbai cricket and the support he provided to his teammates, like Shardul Thakur, will be remembered fondly.
