Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has advised Prithvi Shaw to work on his work ethic to regain form. Shaw is often touted for his raw talent. However, he has been struggling with consistency, fitness, and performance. These issues have seen him left out of Mumbai’s recent domestic squads and even go unsold in the IPL 2025 auction.
Speaking about Shaw in an interview with The Indian Express, Iyer praised his natural talent but emphasized the importance of discipline. “Prithvi Shaw started on a great note. He’s got a blessing of timing the ball and scoring runs at a great pace. All of us in the team feel he’s blessed with phenomenal talent,” Iyer said.

“But he just has to focus on his work ethic, and everything else will follow. He’s god-gifted,” Iyer added.
Shaw’s performances in domestic cricket have been below par in recent months. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he managed just 197 runs. Even though his strike rate of 156.34 was impressive, his average of 21.88 was very dismal.
The downward trend continued in the IPL 2025 auction, where no franchise bid for him, even at a low base price of INR 50 lakh. Shaw’s last IPL season with Delhi Capitals saw him score 198 runs in eight matches, averaging 24.75 with a strike rate of 163.64. His performances, however, were not enough to cement his place in the playing XI.
Once seen as India’s next cricket superstar, Prithvi Shaw burst onto the international scene in 2018 after leading India to victory in the U19 World Cup. But so far, his senior career hasn’t lived up to the hype. Shaw has only played five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I for India.
Injuries, disciplinary issues, and a lack of consistency have held him back. Meanwhile, many of his U19 teammates, like Shubman Gill and Arshdeep Singh, have gone on to become key players for India across all formats.
Despite Shaw’s struggles, Shreyas Iyer still believes in his potential. “Winning matches is important, but staying consistent takes good work habits. Prithvi has the talent, and with the right focus, he can accomplish amazing things,” Iyer said.
