Anrich Nortje Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

The Proteas have been dealt a major blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy, with star fast bowler Anrich Nortje ruled out due to a back injury. The news comes just weeks before the tournament kicks off, leaving South Africa scrambling to find a suitable replacement.

Big Setback for South Africa

Nortje’s inclusion in the original 15-man squad was a big talking point. His pace and aggression have been key to South Africa’s success in recent years. But after undergoing scans earlier this week, it’s been confirmed that he won’t recover in time for the tournament.

The 31-year-old pacer has had his fair share of injuries in the past, but this one comes at a crucial time. With the Champions Trophy starting next month, South Africa will now need to fill a huge void in their bowling attack.

Who Will Replace Nortje?

Cricket South Africa hasn’t announced a replacement yet, but fans are eager to see who steps up. The squad already includes some promising bowlers, but replacing someone of Nortje’s caliber won’t be easy.

South Africa’s campaign kicks off on 21 February against Afghanistan in Karachi. With tough fixtures against Australia and England also lined up, the team will need to be at their best.

Bavuma Leads a Balanced Squad

Despite Nortje’s absence, South Africa’s squad looks solid. Temba Bavuma will lead the side, which features 10 players from the 2023 World Cup squad that reached the semi-finals. There’s a good mix of experience and fresh talent, with players like Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton, and Tristan Stubbs getting their first taste of a major 50-over tournament.

All-rounder Wiaan Mulder has also made the cut, adding depth to the team’s batting and bowling options.

High Hopes Despite Setbacks

South Africa has been drawn in Group B, alongside Afghanistan, Australia, and England. The team’s recent performances at ICC events have shown they can go deep into tournaments. But they’ve yet to claim that elusive silverware.

Head coach Rob Walter remains optimistic, despite the setback. “This squad boasts a wealth of experience, with many players having consistently performed in high-pressure situations. That kind of experience is invaluable in a tournament like this,” he said.

Walter also highlighted the addition of Imraan Khan as the team’s batting coach. “We’re looking forward to Imraan joining our support staff. He will be a great asset as we look to strengthen our batting and continue improving as a unit,” Walter added.

Before the Champions Trophy, South Africa will play a tri-series against Pakistan and New Zealand from 8 to 14 February. The squad for that series will be announced soon, giving fans a glimpse of who might step into Nortje’s shoes.
