In a significant setback for Pakistan’s cricketing ambitions, fast bowler Naseem Shah has been left out of their ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup squad, which was officially unveiled on Friday, September 22. The absence of the talented speedster is a blow to Pakistan’s aspirations of securing their second Cricket World Cup title.

Naseem Shah’s Injury Woes

Naseem Shah’s omission from the squad is a consequence of a lingering injury that he sustained during Pakistan’s Super Four encounter against India in the Asia Cup. This unfortunate setback has left him sidelined for an extended period, making him unavailable for crucial matches in the coming months.

The loss of Naseem Shah is particularly devastating for Pakistan, given his ability to make the cricket ball move menacingly. Notably, he boasts an outstanding One Day International (ODI) record, having taken 32 wickets at an impressive average of 16.96, which includes two five-wicket hauls.

Pakistan’s Resilience

Despite this setback, Pakistan’s World Cup squad remains packed with seasoned cricketers who possess the skills and experience necessary to bolster the team’s title chances. Leading the batting charge is captain Babar Azam, well-supported by a formidable lineup including Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, and Salman Ali Agha. The team also features promising talents such as Mohammad Haris and middle-order batsman Saud Shakeel, who have demonstrated their capabilities in domestic and emerging cricket.

Pakistan’s arsenal includes two spin-bowling all-rounders in Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, with Salman Agha and Iftikhar Ahmed offering additional spin-bowling options. In case of the need for a leg-spinner, Usama Mir is also at the team’s disposal. The pace attack of Pakistan will be spearheaded by Shaheen Shah Afridi, supported by the likes of Haris Rauf, Mohammad Waseem, and now, Hasan Ali.

Pakistan’s World Cup Start

Before the World Cup officially kicks off, Pakistan will engage in two warm-up matches against New Zealand and Australia. Their tournament journey commences on October 6th, with a match against the Netherlands in Hyderabad.

While the absence of Naseem Shah is undoubtedly a setback, Pakistan’s cricketing legacy is built on resilience and adaptability. With a blend of experienced campaigners and promising talents, they will look to defy the odds and make a strong statement in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
Pakistan’s Squad for the World Cup: Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan (wicketkeepr), Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, and Mohammad Wasim Jr
