Steve Smith Cleared for Sri Lanka Test Series

Australia’s temporary Test captain, Steve Smith, is all set to rejoin the Test squad for the upcoming two-match series in Sri Lanka. Cricket Australia (CA) shared that Smith recently got the green light after a specialist checked out his right elbow injury. He picked up the injury during a Big Bash League (BBL) game on January 17.

The 35-year-old, who temporarily takes over the captaincy from Pat Cummins, is expected to resume batting practice later this week. CA had initially feared Smith’s injury might sideline him from the Sri Lanka tour, but the latest update has eased those concerns.

Steve Smith has undergone a specialist medical review today following his right elbow injury sustained during the Big Bash League. He has been cleared to rejoin the Test squad and travel to Dubai. Smith is expected to return to batting later in the week to begin his preparation for the first Test against Sri Lanka,” CA announced in a statement.

Cummins’ Recovery Under the Microscope

While Smith is set to return, Australia’s regular Test captain Pat Cummins remains under observation after suffering a toe injury during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Cummins, who is likely to miss the Sri Lanka series, is being monitored closely by the selectors as he gears up for a crucial period of cricket.

“He (Cummins) will seek specialist rehabilitation advice this week and is likely to require a period of physical preparation and recovery,” CA stated. The selectors are hopeful Cummins will be fit for the Champions Trophy and the World Test Championship final later this year.

Tests Vital for Champions Trophy Preparation

Australia has already secured a spot in the World Test Championship final, meaning the two Sri Lanka Tests will not impact points standings. However, the series offers a valuable opportunity for Australia’s batters to prepare for spin-friendly conditions ahead of the Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan.

“This series isn’t about points but preparation,” said a source close to the team. “Playing spin well will be key in the Champions Trophy, and these matches will help the squad fine-tune their game.”
