Mumbai Indians is a franchise cricket team of Indian Premier League since 2008. The Mumbai Indians is owned by Reliance Industries (Mukesh Ambani) as they bought it for $111.9 million making it the most expensive franchise to be sold in the league (IPL). Currently, Mumbai Indians is the most valuable franchise with the value of more than ₹800 crore. 

Mumbai Indians is one of the most successful teams of the IPL. The team won the IPL title for 4 times in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 respectively.  Similarly, they won CLT20 two times in the year 2011 and 2013.

IPL 2008

In the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League, the Mumbai based franchise named local boy Sachin Tendulkar as their icon player. Sachin was also named as the captain of the Mumbai Indians. Former Indian cricketer Lalchand Rajput was appointed as the head coach. In the first edition, the franchise got back to back setbacks as Sachin was injured just before the first-ever IPL was about to start and was unavailable and Harbhajan Singh was named as the stand-in captain. Later Harbhajan Singh was suspended from the tournament for slapping his Indian teammate and Kings XI Punjab player Sreesanth in the face while both the teams were shaking the hands after the match got over. Shaun Pollock the legendary South African bowler took the captaincy and balanced the team by winning 6 out of the next 6 games before handing over the captaincy to Sachin Tendulkar who came back after recovering from the injury. The time when Sachin took the captaincy the franchise needed to win two out of the next four league matches to qualify for the Semi-finals. Out of that four matches Mumbai Indians won just one game and failed to make it to the semi-finals by just one point. Mumbai Indians finished at the 5th position with 14 points winning seven and losing seven games.

IPL 2009

In the 2nd edition of the league, which was to be played in South Africa due to general elections in India the team make few changes and traded Robin Uthappa and Ashish Nehra for Zaheer Khan and Shikhar Dhawan with Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils. respectively. Lasith Malinga who missed the first edition due to injury he joined the franchise to make their bowling department strong. Shaun Pollock bid adieu just after playing the first season of the league and the franchise appointed him the head coach. Another South African star player JP Duminy was added to the IPL 2009 squad from the IPL Auction 2009. The franchise failed again to make it to the semi-finals even with the star-packed squad and ended their season at the seventh position with 11 points making it their worst IPL season.

IPL 2010

In the 3rd edition of the league, Mumbai Indians had to shift their home ground to Brabourne Stadium from Wankhede as it was under renovation to host matches of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. The franchise named former India cricketer Robin Singh as their head coach and Shaun Pollock was given the role of a bowling coach. Mumbai Indians added the West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard to their squad. The team started magnificently by winning seven out of starting eight matches. After that, they won three out of the six matches and made it to semi-finals for the first time. In the semi-finals, they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs and made it to the finals. In the finals, they were defeated by MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings by 22 runs. Sachin Tendulkar who had scored 618 runs (Average – 47.53 & Strike Rate – 132.6) won the orange cap for scoring most runs in the league. The team also qualified for the 2010 Champions League Twenty20 but was eliminated from the group stage.

IPL 2011

In the 4th edition of the league, two new franchises were added and each franchise can retain only four players from their IPL 2010 squad, so Mumbai Indians retained Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard. They bought Rohit Sharma ($2 million), Andrew Symonds ($850,000) and Munaf Patel ($700,000) in the Auction. Mumbai finished at the 3rd position with 18 points in the points table and qualified for the Eliminator. In the Eliminator Mumbai Indians defeated Kolkata Knight Rider at the home ground and make it to the Qualifying final in which they lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore and failed to make it to the finals. Laith Malinga won the Purple Cap as he finished as the highest wicket-taker of the season with 28 wickets.

For the second consecutive year Mumbai Indians qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 but this time their squad was not full due to many injuries. Sachiin was also one of the players who was ruled out of the tournament due to injury so Harbhajan Singh was named as the captain. The squad was left with only 14 members in which there were only six Indians but as per the rules only 4 overseas players can be the part of the playing XI but an exception was made for the Mumbai Indians so that five overseas players can play. After the league matches, MI ended at the 2nd spot and qualified for the semi-finals and Suryakumar Yadav recovered from the injury and joined the team and the concession given for the Mumbai Indians by the Champions League was withdrawn. Mumbai Indians defeated Somerset County Cricket Club in the semi-finals and made it to the finals. In the finals, MI met their league team RCB, and batting first scored only 139 runs in 20 overs. The Bangalore team made a good start and after that their wickets started collapsing and the team got all-out on 108 and Mumbai Indians won their first title.

IPL 2012

In the 5th edition of the league, their icon player and captain Sachin Tendulkar stepped down from the captaincy just before their first match of the season and Harbhajan Singh was appointed as the captain. Once again Sachin missed few matches due to injury in this season and their new bought of the season Mitchell Johnson was ruled out of the season in the late-April due to injury. Mumbai had four wins in the first half of the league and they managed to win six matches in the other half and ended up at the third position in the points table. In the Eliminator match against their rival Chennai Super Kings, they bowled first but failed to restrict opponent for a short target as CSK set the target of 188 runs. Mumbai Indians started good but then they started losing wickets at regular interval and ended up 149/9 and hence got eliminated from IPL 2012. Being in top 4 they qualify for the 2012 Champions League Twenty20 in South Africa but their also the defending champions failed to do something and ended up their season without a single win in the four matches.

IPL 2013 – The Golden Year

In the 6th edition of the league, the franchise appointed Anil Kumble as their chief mentor who was previously at the same position in the Bangalore based franchise. In this season Ricky Ponting was also the part of the team but his batting form didn’t go well and hence he was dropped and Rohit Sharma was handed over the captaincy of the franchise. In the initial matches, Dinesh Karthik rescued and contributed a lot to the team and won matches for the franchise. At the end of the league, MI was at the 2nd position with 22 points. In the Qualifier 1, their match was against their arch-rival Chennai Super Kings where CSK with the help of Michael Hussey (86*) and Suresh Raina (82*) set the target of 193 to win. Dwayne Smith gave a very good start to the team but his wicket came as a turning point of the game as no other Mumbai’s batsmen batted consistently and lost wickets at a regular interval and ended up losing the qualifier 1 by 48 runs. In the Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals again they bowled first and restricted the opponent for 165 and in this qualifier also Dwayne Smith star for Mumbai and won the match by 4 wickets and took the ticket to the final. In the finals, it was again the Chennai Super Kings and batting first Mumbai Indians with the help of Kieron Pollard 60* off 32 set a decent target of 149 runs. Chennai Super Kings players failed to repeat what they did in Qualifier 1 and ended at 125-9 in 20 overs and with this Mumbai Indians won their first-ever Indian Premier League title. Rohit Sharma was named the captain of the team as Ricky Ponting retired from all forms of cricket and though Ponting didn’t play many matches in IPL one of his stunner catch to dismiss Delhi Daredevils player Unmukt Chand left his iconic image in the IPL.

Mumbai Indians for the third time qualified for the Champions League Twenty20 but they did not start this season quite well and at the end of the league match they had required a lot of effort to qualify for the semi-finals but they did and their efforts don’t stop there as they ended up winning the CLT20 for the second time and became the first team to win IPL and CLT20 in the same year under the leadership of Rohit Sharma.

IPL 2014 – Luckiest Season

In the 7th edition of the league, which was to be played in two legs first on in UAE and the second one in India, Mumbai Indians failed to start good and in the five matches of the UAE leg, they lost all the five matches. In India’s leg, they won some matches and lost some which left them to win the last league match against Rajasthan Royals to get the ticket for the play-offs. In the last league match, RR set the target of 190 runs which MI has to achieve in 14.3 overs as both the teams were at 14 points in the points table and to qualify Mumbai has to win the match in 14.3 so their NRR can improve. The team with the unbeaten knock of Corey Anderson (95*) achieved it as Mumbai Indians tied the match on 14.3 over so for the better NRR they were required to hit a boundary and a new man Aditya Tare was facing James Faulkner and in the next ball which was bowled a full toss by Faulkner, Tare smashed a six and Mumbai Indians got the ticket to the play-offs. But in the Eliminitaor it was Chennai Super Kings who ended their dream and eliminated them out of the IPL 2014.

Once again Mumbai Indians qualified for the Champions League Twenty20, 2014 but this time under the leadership of Kieron Pollard as Rohit Sharma was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. This time Mumbai Indians managed to win only one out of their three league match and got eliminated from the league.

IPL 2015 – Road to the second IPL title

In the 8th edition of the league, the team bought Aaron Finch, Mitchell McClenaghan, Pragyan Ojha, Hardik Pandya and six other players from the IPL 2015 Auction but once again the team’s season started with injury as Aaron Finch and Corey Anderson were ruled out of the season and due to which Lendl Simmons got a chance in the team. The team ended as at the 2nd spot in the IPL points table with 16 points. One more time after IPL 2013 it was El Clásico of IPL to be played in the Qualifier 1 between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians and this time Mumbai Indians won the match by 25 runs and entered into the final and Chennai Super Kings went on to play Qualifier 2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore and defeated them to play against Mumbai Indians in the final. This was the third time after IPL 2010 (Winner CSK) and IPL 2013 (Winner MI) final when this team will play final against each other. In the IPL 2015 final batting first Mumbai Indians set a mammoth target against CSK of 203 runs with the help of Lendl Simmons (68) 6th half-centuries of the season, Rohit Sharma (50) and 36 runs from each Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu. While chasing the target Dwayne Smith gave a blistering start to CSK but once his inning ended no other batsmen take over the responsibility and team failed short of 41 runs and with this Mumbai Indians lifted their second IPL title.

IPL 2016

In the 9th edition of the league, the defending champions purchased seven players from the Auction which included two overseas player Tim Southee and Jos Buttler and domestic players like Nathu Singh, Jitesh Sharma, KP Kamath, Krunal Pandya and Deepak Punia. This time Mumbai Indians performed decently ad ended up at the 5th spot in the IPL points table and hence ended their season.

IPL 2017 – The Most Successful Franchise

In the 10th edition of the league, the team added Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson to their squad by buying him for 2 Crores in IPL Auction. They started their season with a loss against Rising Pune Supergiant by 7 wickets and then they won six consecutive matches but Rising Pune Supergiant break their streak as they once again defeated MI by Loss by 3 runs. Then they played a tie against Gujrat Lions which they eventually won in the super overs thanks to the effort of Jasprit Bumrah who defended 12 runs. At the end of the league matches, Mumbai Indians topped the points table with twenty points. In the Qualifier 1, they met Rising Pune Supergiant for the third time and the result remained the same as the previous one as they got defeated Loss by 20 runs and Rising Pune Supergiant made it to the finals. In the Qualifier 2, it was Kolkata Knight Riders whom Mumbai Indians easily defeated and made it to the final. Now the two teams were set to face each other for the fourth time in the same league and RPS has won the previous three matches and in the finals, Mumbai Indians defended 129 runs and defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by 1 run in the nail-biting finals and at the end of the league it was 3-1 but that one was that matters the most as Mumbai Indians lifted Indian Premier League trophy for the third time and became the most successful franchise in the history of the IPL.

IPL 2018 

IPL 2018 Mega Auction

In the 11th edition of the league, it was time for mega auctions before which the team has the option to retain maximum three players from their previous squad so MI retained three Indians player and they were their captain Rohit Sharma (₹15 crores), Hardik Pandya (₹11 crores) and Jasprit Bumrah (₹7 crores). In the Auctions, they were left with two RTM (Rights to Match Card) which they used on Kieron Pollard and Krunal Pandya. Apart from these they bought Pat Cummins, Mustafizur Rahman, Evin Lewis, Jean-Paul Duminy, Jason Behrendorff, Akila Dananjaya and Ben Cutting as the overseas players and Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Rahul Chahar, Saurabh Tiwary, Tajinder Singh, Sharad Lumba, Siddhesh Lad, Aditya Tare, Mayank Markande, Anukul Roy, Mohsin Khan, M. D. Nidheesh and Pradeep Sangwan as the Indian players and completed their 25 players squad from the IPL 2018 mega auction.

Season

In the first phase of the season, they managed to win only two of their seven matches and it was getting hard for them to qualify for the play-offs and in the second phase of the season, they managed to win four matches but failed to qualify for the play-offs as they ended on the 5th spot of the IPL points table.

IPL 2019 – Champion for the record 4th time

In the 12th edition of the league, the team retained 18 players from their IPL 2018 squad. They traded in South African Wk-Batsman Quinton de Kock and bought Yuvraj Singh and Lasith Malinga along with four other Indian players from the IPL 2019 Auction. In the league matches, Mumbai Indians emerged as the best team as they topped the IPL 2019 points table with 18 points. Their league matches result looked like: L, W, L, W, W, W, L, W, W, L, W, L, W, W. In the Qualifier 1, against their rival Chennai Super Kings bowling first they restricted their opponent for 131-4 in 20 overs and with the help of Suryakumar Yadav’s knock of 71* (54) they won the match by 6 wickets with nine-ball left and made it to the finals for the fifth time. Chennai Super Kings defeated Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2, and again it was time for El Clásico of IPL in the IPL 2019 finals. In IPL 2019 MI had won all three matches against CSK and both the teams were playing face to face in the IPL finals for the fourth time out of which Mumbai had won two (IPL 2013 & IPL 2015) and Chennai had won one (IPL 2010). Before this final both the teams had won the IPL trophy three times as MI has emerged as champions in IPL 2013, IPL 2015, and IPL 2017 whereas CSK had won it in IPL 2010, IPL 2011 and IPL 2018. Since 2013 MI had ween winning a trophy in every alternate year and it was the same occasion. 

In the final Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to bat first. Batting first Mumbai Indians scored 45 runs in the Mandatory Powerplay in 6 overs and lost the wicket of both the openers. The middle-order struggled a lot and failed to make any big impact and lose their wicket in short intervals but somehow their most reliable player Kieron Pollard scored 41* off 25 balls and the team ended their innings for a respectful total of 149-8.

Chennai Super Kings while chasing 150 runs scored 53 runs in the Mandatory Powerplay in 6 overs with the loss of 1 wicket. Shane Watson was playing consistently but no one on the other end got success in making a good partnership and as a result, he also got run out on 80 runs in the last third ball of the innings. This left CSK in a situation of 4 runs required in 2 balls and Malinga bowling from the other end and Shardul Thakur the new batsman batting at the strikers end. He faced the first delivery and get 2 runs of that and now it was 2 required off the last ball Malinga did what he is called doing for the best and picked up the wicket of Thakur and Mumbai Indians claimed their fourth title of the Indian Premier League. They defeated CSK in all four occasions in this year’s IPL. 

IPL 2020 

In the 13th edition of the league, Mumbai Indians traded Sherfane Rutherford (6.2 Cr.), Trent Boult (2.2 Cr.), and Dhawal Kulkarni (75 Lakhs) before the IPL 2020 Auction and bought Nathan Coulter-Nile (8 Cr.), Chris Lynn (2 Cr.), Saurabh Tiwary (50 Lakhs), Mohsin Khan (20 Lakhs), Digvijay Deshmukh (20 Lakhs), and Prince Balwant Rai Singh (20 Lakhs) in the Auction.

The 13th edition was scheduled to be played from 29th March with defending champions Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings but the CoranaVirus (COVID-19) took over the world by and BCCI postponed the league to mid-April and as India and many other countries were under lockdown.

As the pandemic grew and the number of cases in India kept mounting, the BCCI decided to host the tournament in the UAE after receiving the government approval. IPL 2020 will take place from September 19 to November 20 across three venues – Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
