In a significant development for Cricket South Africa, it has been announced that ODI skipper Temba Bavuma will be absent from the two World Cup warm-up matches that the Proteas are scheduled to play soon.
South Africa is set to compete against Afghanistan and New Zealand in warm-up games for the ICC World Cup, with matches scheduled for September 29 and October 2, respectively. However, the team will be without the services of skipper Temba Bavuma, who had to travel back home due to personal reasons.
Although Bavuma’s absence may pose a challenge for South Africa, it is currently limited to the warm-up games. Whether he will return to compete in the World Cup remains uncertain. Star batter Aiden Markram has been announced as the stand-in captain for South Africa in Bavuma’s absence.
Cricket South Africa conveyed this news via Twitter, stating, “#CWC23 TEAM UPDATE Proteas ODI Captain Temba Bavuma will travel back home due to family reasons. Bavuma misses 2 #CWC23 warm-up matches vs Afghanistan, vs New Zealand, Markram will captain in his absence.”
Despite this setback, South Africa enters the World Cup with confidence, having recently secured a series victory against Australia in a five-match ODI series. After losing the first two games, South Africa bounced back to win the remaining three, clinching the series.
Following the warm-up matches, South Africa will commence its World Cup campaign by facing Sri Lanka on October 7 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. With recent victories boosting their morale, the team aims for a strong start to the tournament. Bavuma’s absence during the warm-ups will be closely observed to gauge its impact on the team’s preparations.
Cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the ICC World Cup 2023, looking forward to thrilling encounters and remarkable performances, both from South Africa and other participating teams in the tournament.
