Mohammad Azharuddin Predicted Tilak Varma's Stardom, Basit Ali Reveals

Tilak Varma single-handedly led India to win during the second T20I against England. The left-handed batter scored 74 off 55 balls as India defeated England by 2 wickets.

However, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali revealed that Tilak’s rise was foreseen long ago by former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit recalled a conversation with Azharuddin, where the former skipper had singled out Tilak for his immense potential, even before he gained prominence.

Azharuddin’s Early Belief in Tilak

“When I interviewed Mohammad Azharuddin, he mentioned Tilak Varma when he was nothing, just playing IPL. He said, ‘There is Tilak Varma. Watch him [play],’ and now it’s come true.” Basit shared.

Basit praised Tilak’s performance, noting his maturity and adaptability under pressure. “You saw how Gautam [Gambhir] used the left-right combination well. Tilak played brilliantly, what a match,” he added.

A Knock to Remember

Chasing 166, India found themselves struggling after early wickets disrupted their rhythm. Before the end of the 10th over, half of the Indian team was back in the pavilion, with just 79 runs on the board. They needed another 87 runs to win. Tilak then put up a crucial 38 run partnership with Washington Sundar

India needed 20 runs to win off the final 3 overs with just 2 wickets in hand. Tilak formed a vital partnership with Ravi Bishnoi. Bishnoi’s quick nine runs, including two boundaries, complemented Tilak’s calm demeanor. With four balls to spare, Tilak sealed the victory with a stylish boundary, sending the crowd into raptures.

Guidance from Gambhir

Tilak credited head coach Gautam Gambhir for helping him develop a flexible approach to batting. He revealed how Gambhir’s advice during matches shaped his mindset.

“I had a chat with Gautam sir. He said, ‘You can show people you can play both types of innings.’ That’s what I aimed to do,” Tilak shared.

Tilak emphasized his mental preparation to finish games. “I told myself, whatever happens, I will stay till the end. I can adjust my strike rate according to the situation, whether six or ten an over,” he explained.
