Usman Khawaja Expected to Recover for Second Test After Head Blow

Usman Khawaja, the Australian opener, is on track to be available for the second Test against the West Indies in Brisbane after undergoing concussion protocols following a head injury during the first Test in Adelaide. Khawaja was struck on the side of his helmet by a short ball from West Indies bowler Shamar Joseph and had to retire hurt with just one run needed for victory.

Thankfully, Khawaja passed the initial concussion assessment in the dressing room and has continued to show no symptoms over the weekend. According to a Cricket Australia spokesperson, “He completed normal concussion assessments today [Sunday]. Khawaja will continue to be monitored for any delayed symptoms. He will be reviewed again tomorrow prior to returning to training.”

Khawaja’s recovery bodes well for Australia, as they are likely to field an unchanged lineup for the second Test, aiming to secure a 2-0 series win. Matt Renshaw, the spare batter in the squad, may be made available for Brisbane Heat’s Challenger final against Adelaide Strikers on Monday and possibly the final against Sydney Sixers on Wednesday, should Heat advance.

Australia’s pace attack, comprising Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, along with spinner Nathan Lyon, has been formidable this season, with the first Test against the West Indies ending in little more than two days. With Hazlewood recently achieving 250 Test wickets, all four frontline bowlers now boast this milestone, a testament to their skill and consistency.

Looking ahead, Australia’s fast bowlers are being rested from the ODI series against the West Indies but may feature in the T20Is that follow. This period of rest could allow them to potentially play seven consecutive matches together as an attack, including the upcoming Tests against New Zealand. Scott Boland, who has been with the Test squad throughout the season, and the promising Lance Morris are available as backup options if needed.

Khawaja’s progress is encouraging for Australia as they prepare for the next Test, and their bowling unit’s impressive form provides them with a strong foundation going forward in the series and beyond.
