As Mumbai Indians (MI) gear up to host Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 45 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium, the evening promises more than just cricket. MI will celebrate their special tradition — Education and Sports for All (ESA) Day — bringing a wave of inspiration and joy to the iconic venue.
ESA Day is an annual initiative launched by the Mumbai Indians in collaboration with the Reliance Foundation. On this day, MI invites thousands of underprivileged children from various NGOs to watch a live IPL match. This year, around 19,000 children, including 200 children with special needs, will experience the thrill of cheering for their favorite stars at the Wankhede Stadium.
MI continues to highlight their commitment to empowering young lives through education and sports. By offering children this memorable experience, the franchise aims to nurture dreams and build confidence among the next generation.
Mumbai Indians started supporting the cause back in 2010, but they officially dedicated a full matchday to ESA Day in 2023. The initiative focuses on building talent, providing exposure, and creating opportunities for children who often lack such platforms. Over the years, ESA Day has grown into a meaningful event that blends cricket with social impact.
Ahead of MI’s clash with LSG, Reliance Foundation Chairperson Mrs. Nita Ambani delivered a heartfelt message to the players.
“People who have been with MI know our next game is very special. We have underprivileged children coming, and the energy is really special. So please, put up your best show for them,” Mrs. Ambani said, as quoted on the MI website.
Through this initiative, MI continues to reinforce their philosophy of using sport as a powerful tool for social change.
Although themed matchdays have become a part of IPL culture — with Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting “Go Green Day” and Rajasthan Royals celebrating the “Pink Promise Match” — ESA Day stands out for its scale and lasting impact. While other franchises promote important causes, MI’s focus on education and sports for underprivileged children creates a deeper and more enduring connection with the community.
In a league driven by fierce competition, ESA Day reminds everyone that cricket also serves a higher purpose — inspiring hope and creating opportunities for all.
Mumbai Indians have staged a strong comeback after a tough start to the season. They have now won four consecutive matches and climbed to fifth place on the points table with five wins and 10 points.
Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants are also in the playoff hunt, matching MI with five wins and 10 points. However, they trail slightly due to a lower net run rate. Despite experiencing ups and downs during the season, LSG remains firmly in contention for a playoff spot.
As both teams enter this crucial phase of the tournament, consistency will be the key to securing qualification.
With the electric atmosphere of Wankhede Stadium and thousands of young voices cheering, ESA Day promises to be a memorable occasion. MI’s players will not only play for crucial points but also for the smiles and dreams of 19,000 children who will fill the stands with unmatched energy.
As cricket takes center stage, so does the spirit of giving back, reminding everyone why sports truly matter.
