Babar Azam’s tough run in Test cricket continued as he endured twin failures in the ongoing Test against West Indies in Multan. The Pakistan skipper, who showed great form against South Africa, has struggled to replicate that success on home soil.
Babar walked in after a strong 67-run opening stand between Shan Masood and Mohammad Huraira. However, his stay at the crease was brief. Facing West Indies spinner Jomel Warrican, Babar misjudged an arm ball, expecting it to turn away. The delivery came straight on and struck him plumb in front.
The umpire raised his finger, and Babar was left shocked. This was his second low score in the match, as he managed only 5 off 11 balls.
Fans were quick to compare Babar’s struggles to Virat Kohli’s recent battles with deliveries angling in. Like Kohli, Babar also wasted a review earlier in the match, adding to the criticism. His dismissal on day one had marked his 23rd Test innings without a century, raising questions about his form.
Despite Babar’s struggles, Pakistan ended day two in a strong position. By the time of stumps, the hosts are 109/3 in their second innings, leading by 202 runs. Pakistan skipper Shan Masood led the charge with 52 off 70 balls. However, he fell to an unlucky run out just before stumps.
Earlier in the day, Sajid Khan and Noman Ali dominated with the ball. The spin duo claimed nine wickets between them. They bundled the West Indies out for just 137. Pakistan had posted 230 in their first innings, thanks to a solid partnership between Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan.
Pakistan’s commanding lead puts them in the driver’s seat, with three days left to play. However, Babar’s form remains a concern as the former skipper has been unable to anchor the innings.
