“Babar is the best that we have”, Salman Butt speaks after Pakistan’s exit from CT 2025

Amidst controversies and criticism Pakistan have found at least one former player speaking in favour of Babar Azam. Salman Butt, former Pakistan captain said, “Babar is the best that we have”.

Despite hosting their first ICC tournament in 30 years Pakistan failed to make any long lasting impact. After being beaten by the arch-rivals India, the washed-out match against Bangladesh in their last group-stage match decided their Champions Trophy fate eventually. The fans, experts, former players cannot stop criticising the players and management for their continuous failure. One of the key players who has been constantly criticised by them in Babar Azam.

Babar Azam failed to contribute much and many blamed him solely for Pakistan’s failure. However, Babar Azam was one player from Pakistan who used to be compared to Virat Kohli because of his talent and style of play. Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt spoke in favour of the skill Babar posses and reminded everyone of the kind of batter Babar Azam is.

Speaking on GNN HD News, Butt said: “His Test average with 9 centuries and 26 fifties is 44.5. One-day average is 56.72 with 19 centuries and 32 half-centuries. In T20Is he has an average of 41, strike-rate of 129. Someone tell me if these stats have been beaten by any single player in Pakistan in the last 20 years.” Butt further remarked, “The players who are trying to say they are match-winners, combine them and look at how many matches they have won. I think a comparison is warranted.”

“Who does Babar have?”

Salman Butt went to compare India’s situation with that of Pakistan’s in context of scoring runs. He reminded that the Babar lacks the support that Kohli has in Indian batting unit. “This dip in form, even Kohli had it, but Kohli is such a high-class player that he kept scoring 50s in those matches,” argued Butt. “Who did he have with him? Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni. Big players, match-winners. Who does Babar have?”

According to Salman Butt, “Talk sense. You don’t have a Kohli or a Williamson. Babar is no Kohli. But Babar is the best that we have.” Butt continued, “If he’s not scoring runs, he needs back-up now. When he’s scoring, even if you don’t like him you will have to sing his praises with the world.”
