According to former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali, Sarfaraz Ahmed should be appointed as Pakistan’s mentor in the Champions Trophy. Sarfaraz had led Pakistan to victory in Champions Trophy 2017 final against India. Basit therefore things, Sarfaraz would be the best candidate for the job.
Pakistan are all set to meet arch rivals India in the Champions Trophy scheduled to begin next month. While PCB is hosting the tournament, India will play all their game in Dubai for security reasons. Speaking of Pakistan’s continuous defeats against India in the ICC tournament, former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali suggested PCB to hire a mentor.
“Afghanistan appointed the great Younis Khan as mentor, who is a good choice. People in Pakistan must be sleeping, so is the board. They need a mentor against India, someone who won you the Champions Trophy the last time: Sarfaraz Ahmed,” Basit said on his official YouTube channel.
The last time Pakistan defeated India in an ICC game was in 2021 during the T20 World Cup. Since then it has been a story of continuous failures including the latest being at the T20 edition in 2024. Basit explained, “In this match, Sarfaraz’s suggestions will work. He has the experience of lifting the trophy against them. I won’t take anyone else’s name. He led the team to victory.”
India are grouped with Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand in the Champions Trophy. They will take on Pakistan on February 23 after beginning their campaign with match against Bangladesh on February 20. Then after a six-day gap Indian will return to play their last group match against New Zealand.
Pakistan, on the other hand, will start their campaign with match against the Kiwis on February 19. Then after their match against India, they will take on Bangladesh on February 27. They will play all of their group matches in Pakistan except the India match.
