Arrest Warrant Issued for Shakib Al Hasan Over Dishonoured Cheque Case

A Dhaka court has issued an arrest warrant against Bangladesh’s star all-rounder and politician, Shakib Al Hasan, in a dishonoured cheque case linked to IFIC Bank. The warrant, issued on Sunday by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman, also names three other individuals.

The Case Against Shakib

Shakib, who has been abroad since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, faces allegations of failing to honour cheques worth BDT 4.14 crore. These cheques were issued by his company, Al Hasan Agro Farm Ltd., to repay loans from IFIC Bank’s Banani branch. According to the case, the cheques bounced due to insufficient funds.

The case also implicates Al Hasan Agro Farm’s Managing Director Gazi Shahagir Hossein and directors Emdadul Haque and Malaikar Begum. IFIC Bank’s Relationship Officer Shahibur Rahman filed the case on behalf of the bank.

The court initially summoned Shakib on December 18. He was supposed to appear on January 19. However, his absence led to the arrest warrant being issued. Reports suggest Shakib is unlikely to return soon, as his family resides in the United States.

From Cricket Hero to Political Controversy

Shakib joined politics in 2023, representing the Awami League. He won the Magura-1 constituency in uncontested elections held in January 2024. However, his political career has been mired in controversy.

His decision to enter politics marked the beginning of public criticism. Things worsened when he faced charges in a murder case during political unrest, forcing him to stay away from Bangladesh, citing safety concerns.

Shakib had planned his Test farewell in a home Test against South Africa. He couldn’t take part in the game because of political unrest. However, with legal trouble heading his way, he is unlikely to return to Bangladesh anytime soon. As of now, there’s no confirmation when he will return to Bangladesh.
