Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has weighed in on the recent controversy surrounding Virat Kohli‘s Instagram post, suggesting that making YoYo test results public might not be a bad idea for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
This discussion emerged when Kohli, during the lead-up to the Asia Cup, shared his YoYo test score of 17.2 on his Instagram story, which drew criticism from BCCI officials, leading to advisories for players not to share confidential information with the public.
A few days later, it was reported that Shubman Gill had achieved a higher YoYo test score than Kohli, registering an impressive 18.7. Gill’s score exceeded the minimum threshold of 16.5, raising questions about Kohli’s status as the fittest Indian cricketer. However, it’s essential to understand that YoYo test scores consider various factors when assessing an athlete’s fitness.
Sunil Gavaskar offered his perspective on this matter, cautioning against overanalyzing Gill’s higher score and highlighting the rationale behind conducting such tests on a global stage. In his column for Mid-Day, Gavaskar explained, “There was a lot of excitement when Kohli put out his YoYo score which was more than the limit that the BCCI trainers had set. Shubman Gill posting an even better YoYo score than Virat was by no means one-upmanship. The age difference between the two mustn’t be forgotten, and the elder has to be admired for his fitness standard.”
Gavaskar went on to emphasize the importance of transparency when it comes to YoYo test results. He stated, “If it is true that unless the minimum standard of the YoYo test is not met, then the player is not eligible for selection, then it’s all the more important for this test to be done in the public domain so that the public that follows the game in their millions know that there are no players who have not met the minimum standard in the team.”
