Chennai Super Kings made some unexpected team changes ahead of their much-anticipated face-off against Lucknow Super Giants. This is the Match 30 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, held at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

MS Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl first, as CSK looked to regain their momentum in the tournament. However, what grabbed headlines was the exclusion of two seasoned players — Ravichandran Ashwin and Devon Conway — from the starting XI.

CSK Ring in Changes Midway Through the Season

CSK’s team management has begun to shuffle their combination after a mixed run of results in the first half of the season. The franchise, known for backing experience, seems to be shifting gears by experimenting with new options in search of consistent performances.

The decision to leave out Ashwin and Conway reflects the team’s desire to shake up their setup and bring fresh energy into the lineup.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s Form Under Scrutiny

Ravichandran Ashwin, who rejoined CSK this season after a stint with Rajasthan Royals, has not lived up to expectations with the ball. The veteran off-spinner has struggled to control the flow of runs in the middle overs, a phase where CSK traditionally relies on spinners to apply pressure. His economy rate has gone up, and he has failed to pick wickets at crucial intervals.

Ashwin brings a wealth of experience and tactical intelligence. But CSK’s think tank appears to have taken a performance-based call to strengthen their middle-over bowling.

Devon Conway Misses Out After Inconsistent Start

Devon Conway, who has been a key figure at the top for CSK in previous seasons. He has looked out of rhythm in IPL 2025. He failed to provide quick starts and often lost his wicket early in the innings, putting pressure on the middle order.

With scoring rates proving decisive in powerplays this season, CSK have opted to bench Conway.  Meanwhile, they are exploring other opening combinations that can offer more aggression and stability up front.

A Look at the New-Look CSK Playing XI

In place of Conway and Ashwin, CSK have fielded a youthful side. This includes the likes of Shaik Rasheed and Anshul Kamboj. Rachin Ravindra also returns to the top order. On the other hand, Noor Ahmad and Matheesha Pathirana will shoulder spin and pace duties respectively.
