For almost the entirety of the match between the Punjab Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders, the latter seemed to be racing away with the game. The Knight Riders dismissed PBKS for a paltry total of 111 at PBKS’s home ground. But the Kings made a comeback when no one expected.
Coming off from Hyderabad, where they had scored 245 runs, the PBKS batters were high on confidence. However, things changed swiftly in Chandigarh. After an explosive start from Priyansh Arya and Prrabhsimran Singh, PBKS lost their way. Arya and Prabhsimran contributed almost half of the team’s total.
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer, who has been in amazing form, was dismissed for a duck. The batters just kept on getting deceived by the KKR bowlers. Shashank Singh hit a boundary and a six to take the team over the 100-run mark. They ended with a total of 111 as they were all out in 15.3 overs.
Harshit Rana picked 3 wickets right at the top. He was the pick of the bowlers. Narine and Chakravarthy picked 2 wickets each to consolidate KKR’s position.
Chasing a small target of 112, KKR did not have the best start. They lost both the players in the first 8 balls when the score was 7. However, Rahane and Ankgrish Raghuvanshi steadied the ship and completed a 50-run stand. A 50-run stand in a chase of just over 100 runs seemed to seal the game for KKR. But what followed was dramatic.
When it looked like KKR were running away with the game, Rahane was dismissed by Chahal. A procession started as batters just kept on getting dismissed. Raghuvanshi was dismissed in the next over by Chahal. From 62 for 2, KKR reached 79 for 8.
Andre Russell was still at the crease, and KKR’s hopes were tied to him. The Jamaican hit a boundary and a couple of sixes to lift his team’s spirits. Until the game is actually over, one can’t take things for granted with Russell on the field
On the first ball of the 16th over, Marco Jansen dismissed Russell to win the match by 16 runs. PBKS pulled off one of the biggest heists in cricket. Shreyas Iyer proved his captaincy skills as he stunned his former team.
