Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take the field tonight against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) without their regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. His unexpected absence has surprised many fans, especially as CSK look to break their losing streak in IPL 2025.
CSK have handed the captaincy back to MS Dhoni for the rest of the season. The franchise announced the leadership change earlier today, bringing back the experienced Dhoni to guide the struggling side.
Ruturaj Gaikwad Misses Out Due to Injury
Ruturaj Gaikwad picked up an elbow injury during CSK’s previous match. The injury has forced him to miss not just tonight’s game, but also the remaining matches of the IPL 2025 season. CSK’s medical staff assessed him and advised a rest period, ruling him out of action for the coming weeks.
CSK have signed young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre to replace Gaikwad in the squad. Mhatre impressed with his performances in domestic cricket and during recent trials with the team. Alongside him, Salman Nizar and Urvil Patel also attended the trials, but CSK chose the promising teenager from Mumbai.
Ayush Mhatre won’t play tonight’s match against LSG as he hasn’t joined the squad yet. He is expected to arrive in a couple of days and could make his debut in CSK’s next game against Mumbai Indians. Until then, CSK will rely on their current players to step up in Gaikwad’s absence.
With only two points from six matches, CSK desperately need a win tonight. They hope Dhoni’s leadership and the arrival of young talent like Mhatre will help them revive their campaign.
