Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have made a single change to their playing XI for their IPL 2025 clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Australian pacer Spencer Johnson has been dropped, with former England all-rounder Moeen Ali taking his place.
Moeen Ali was included in the XI in place of Johnson, having previously featured in KKR’s match against Rajasthan Royals, where he picked up two wickets for 23 runs in four overs. Despite his strong showing, he was left out against Mumbai Indians when Sunil Narine returned to the side.
While KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane did not explicitly state why Moeen was brought back, it is believed to be a strategic decision based on pitch conditions. The Eden Gardens surface has been under scrutiny, and Rahane acknowledged that spinners could play a crucial role in this game.
Rahane expressed satisfaction with the pitch at Eden Gardens, stating that KKR had made the decision keeping spin-friendly conditions in mind.
“Looks good, I’m really happy with the pitch, we were also bowling first. It will suit our spinners, at home, you should get what you want, but we’ll need to assess the situation quickly with the bat. We sat together (after the last match), discussed how we can get better, but this is a long tournament and it was one bad day. Moeen Ali comes in place of Spencer Johnson. Regardless of all plans, we’ll have to come out and do well in the middle.”
SRH won the toss and opted to field first. In a notable move, they handed a debut cap to Kamindu Mendis.
With the tournament still in its early stages, KKR’s decision to tweak their playing XI highlights their adaptability to match conditions. Fans will be keen to see if Moeen Ali’s inclusion pays off in this crucial encounter.
