Mohammed Rizwan’s Pakistan doesn’t learn, ICC decides to take action

Pakistan continues to perform poorly in international cricket. The host country for the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy couldn’t win a single game in the tournament. Now, they have lost the ODI series against New Zealand.

Defeat against New Zealand

A month after the embarrassing loss in the ICC Champions Trophy at home, Pakistan has lost an ODI series against New Zealand. They lost the second match of the 3-match series, giving New Zealand an unassailable lead of 2-0. They lost the match by 86 runs in Hamilton.

Penalised for slow over-rate

The Pakistani side was penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate in the second ODI against New Zealand in Hamilton. The Mohammed Rizwan-led team was fined five per cent of their match fee. The visitors were found to be an over short of the target after the time allowances were taken into consideration.

ICC Code of Conduct

As per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which governs minimum over-rate offences, players are fined five percent of their match fees for each time their team falls short of bowling in the stipulated time.

Jeff Crowe, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, issued the sanction. The charge was brought by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Wayne Knights, with support from third umpire Paul Reiffel and fourth umpire Chris Brown. Rizwan admitted to the offence and accepted the penalty, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

Second consecutive offense

The Pakistani side has not been learning from their mistakes. This was the second charge against them in as many matches. In the first game of the series, they were two overs short of the target after time allowances were considered. They lost that match by 73 runs.

What’s ahead for Pakistan

The series’ third and final match is set to take place on Saturday in Mount Maunganui. Led by new captain Salman Agha and missing experienced players Babar Azam and Rizwan, Pakistan had previously suffered a 1-4 defeat in the five-match T20I series against the Black Caps during the tour.
