India booked their spot in the semi-final of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. The defending champions defeated Bangladesh by 8 wickets in their Super Six stage to get through to the semi-final.
The match between India and Bangladesh was marred by a rain delay. Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bat first. However, they struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack. Left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma led the charge with remarkable figures of 3/15. She also became the tournament’s joint-leading wicket-taker. Vaishnavi now has 9 wickets to her name.
Bangladesh’s innings started on the back foot, losing opener Mosammat Eva to the third ball. By the end of the powerplay, they were 16/3. Indian bowlers, including Shabnam Shakil (1/7) and VJ Joshitha (1/6), capitalized on the conditions, making run-scoring a daunting task.
Captain Sumaiya Akter tried to anchor the innings with a gritty 21 off 29 balls, supported by Jannatul Maoua’s 14. The duo added 31 runs for the sixth wicket, providing brief resistance. However, their efforts weren’t enough as Bangladesh crawled to 64/8 in 20 overs.
Chasing a modest target, India got off to a flying start, thanks to Trisha Gongadi’s blistering knock. The star batter smashed 40 runs off 23 balls, laced with eight boundaries. Her aggressive approach put Bangladesh’s bowlers on the back foot early.
Though Trisha fell in the seventh over, her efforts had already placed India within touching distance of victory. Skipper Niki Prasad (5*) and Sanika Chalke (11*) calmly completed the chase in just 7.1 overs, with 77 balls to spare.
The Women in Blue have been outstanding with the ball throughout the tournament. No team has managed to cross the 100-run mark against them. Bangladesh’s 64-run total was the highest against India so far. They previously dismissed West Indies for 44 and Malaysia for 31.
India will now play against Scotland before their semi-final clash. Meanwhile, South Africa and Australia have also secured semi-final berths. The final spot remains undecided, with England and Nigeria in contention.
