India’s pace ace Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss most of the white-ball series against England. The decision comes after he struggled with back spasms during the final innings of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With the ICC Champions Trophy approaching, team management wants to carefully manage his workload to keep him fit for the big tournament.
Bumrah’s Injury Raises Alarm Bell
The 30-year-old Bumrah was a standout performer in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, claiming an impressive 32 wickets despite India’s 1-3 series loss to Australia. However, bowling over 150 overs across four Tests appears to have taken a toll on his back.
According to sources, the exact severity of Bumrah’s back spasms is unclear. The BCCI medical team is monitoring the situation closely. They want to have him fit for the Champions Trophy starting February 19.
Possible Recovery Timeline
Back spasms can range in severity, and the recovery period varies accordingly. If Jasprit Bumrah’s injury turns out to be a Grade 1 issue, he could be back on the field in two to three weeks. But if it’s a Grade 2 injury, his recovery could take up to six weeks. The biggest concern? A Grade 3 injury, which would keep him out of action for at least three months. The Indian team would be hoping for Bumrah’s recovery before the Champions Trophy.
Given these possibilities, his participation in the England series appears doubtful. The pacer might aim to make a late comeback for the final ODI in Ahmedabad on February 12, but that will depend entirely on his recovery progress.
Focus on Champions Trophy
Team India is scheduled to begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 in Dubai. Ensuring Bumrah’s fitness for this ICC event is a top priority.
A BCCI official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated, “We’re taking a cautious approach with Bumrah’s injury. His availability for the Champions Trophy is crucial, and we don’t want to rush his return for the England series.”

What It Means for Team India?
Without Jasprit Bumrah, India’s bowling lineup could look quite different for the upcoming series against England. The team will need to depend on pacers like Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna to step up and cover for his absence.
The five-match T20I series kicks off on January 22, followed by a three-match ODI series. While Bumrah wasn’t expected to play in the T20Is, he would have been a key figure in the ODI squad — especially with the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner.
