“Afghanistan outplayed us today…”, Skipper Jos Buttler Reflects on England’s Daunting Defeat Against Afghanistan

In a dramatic turn of events at the 2023 Cricket World Cup, Afghanistan’s cricketing underdogs stunned the cricketing world by securing a resounding 69-run victory over England. The match unfolded as a thrilling display of talent and determination, redefining the landscape of the tournament’s early stages.

Jos Buttler’s Perspective on the Loss

The losing captain, Jos Buttler, expressed his disappointment and analyzed the factors that contributed to England’s defeat. He acknowledged Afghanistan’s outstanding performance and the execution that went awry for his team.

“Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone,” Buttler admitted during the post-match presentation.

Afghanistan’s Superior Performance

Buttler gave full credit to Afghanistan for their exceptional performance, acknowledging that they had outplayed England on the day.

“Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution; we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball. They have some fantastic bowlers,” Buttler noted.

He also pointed out that the conditions, including the dew, did not play as big a role as expected, and the ball held up more than anticipated. Afghanistan’s bowlers, Buttler observed, executed their plans effectively by maintaining a disciplined line and length.

“The dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough.”

Learning from the Defeat

Buttler emphasized the need for his team to take the defeat as a learning experience and not rush to move past it.

“You got to let these defeats hurt; there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group; we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger.”

He stressed the importance of individual players being able to perform under pressure and underlined their collective commitment to working hard to improve.

“We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure, and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards.”
