Lizaad Williams announced as replacement of Harry Brook

South African fast bowler Lizaad Williams has been signed by the Delhi Capitals as a replacement for English batter Harry Brook in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Brook withdrew from the tournament to mourn his grandmother’s death, opening up a spot in the Delhi Capitals squad for Williams.

The 30-year-old Williams made his international debut in 2021 and has since represented South Africa in two Tests, four ODIs, and 11 T20 Internationals. He joins Delhi Capitals at his base price of ₹50 lakh.

In a statement, the Delhi Capitals franchise announced, “Lizaad Williams, the South African fast bowler, has been signed by the Delhi Capitals as a replacement for England’s Harry Brook for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2024.

Brook, who was signed by Delhi Capitals for ₹4 crore, decided to withdraw from the league after his grandmother passed away in February. In a statement on social media, Brook expressed his excitement at being picked by Delhi Capitals but explained that he needed to withdraw due to personal reasons.

“I lost my grandmother last month; she was a rock to me, and I spent a huge amount of my childhood in her home. My attitude to life and love for cricket was shaped by her and my late grandfather,” Brook wrote.

Brook had a mixed IPL season last year with Sunrisers Hyderabad, scoring a century against Kolkata Knight Riders but managing only 190 runs in 11 matches. He had also opted out of England‘s recent five-Test series in India after participating in the pre-tour training camp in the UAE.

Williams’ inclusion in the Delhi Capitals squad adds depth to their fast bowling options and will be a valuable addition as the team looks to strengthen its campaign in the IPL 2024.
