Rashid Khan Impresses Fans by Speaking Malayalam in Thiruvananthapuram

Afghanistan’s cricket sensation, Rashid Khan, left fans in Thiruvananthapuram amazed with his linguistic skills as he engaged with them in Malayalam at the Greenfield International Stadium. During a recent interaction with Indian fans at the stadium, Rashid endeared himself further by asking how to say “How are you?” in Malayalam. The enthusiastic crowd enthusiastically taught him the phrase, which he cheerfully repeated. Rashid Khan also didn’t shy away from sharing handshakes and taking selfies with spectators.

Afghanistan was originally scheduled to play a warm-up match against South Africa at the Greenfield International Stadium on September 29. Unfortunately, rain played spoilsport, resulting in the abandonment of the game. Now, Hashmatullah Shahidi and his team are gearing up to face Sri Lanka at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on October 3.

“My speed, my quick wrong ‘uns all developed playing at home. If I bowled like a normal wrist spinner it would turn slowly — my brothers would defend easily. I had to do something different, so I developed variations,” Rashid was quoted as saying.

In a recent interview, Rashid Khan shed light on his unique style of play, explaining how he developed variations while growing up. He mentioned that instead of relying on traditional leg-spin, which his cousins could easily defend, he honed his craft by introducing speed and quick wrong ‘uns, making him a formidable spinner.

Rashid Khan is expected to play a pivotal role for Afghanistan in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, especially on the spin-friendly Indian pitches. With an impressive record of 172 wickets from 94 ODIs, he is Afghanistan’s leading wicket-taker in the format. Additionally, he leads the charts for his country in both T20Is (128 wickets in 81 matches) and Tests (34 wickets in five matches).

Afghanistan will kick off their World Cup 2023 campaign against Bangladesh at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on October 7. With Rashid Khan’s stellar abilities and a talented squad, Afghanistan aims to make a significant impact on the tournament.
