Former Team India head coach, Ravi Shastri, is optimistic about India’s chances of winning a World Cup soon, despite the heartbreak in the ODI World Cup 2023 finals. Shastri, who witnessed India’s exceptional performance throughout the tournament, believes that the Men in Blue have the potential to clinch a World Cup title in the near future.
Reflecting on the ODI World Cup 2023, where India suffered a batting failure in the finals against Australia, Shastri acknowledged the disappointment but encouraged the players to learn from the experience. He drew parallels with cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, emphasizing that even Tendulkar had to wait for six World Cups before winning one.
Shastri expressed his confidence in India‘s capabilities, particularly in the shorter format of the game. He stated, “I see India winning a World Cup very soon. It might not be a 50-overs (one) that easily because you have to rebuild the side, but in 20-overs cricket, the very next one India will be a very serious challenger because you have got the nucleus.”
While acknowledging the hurt from the ODI World Cup loss, Shastri emphasized that winning a World Cup requires excellence on the big day. He urged the team to remain focused, especially in shorter formats where India has a strong foundation.
As the Indian team prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June 2024, decisions regarding the participation of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are yet to be finalized. The team management aims to build a core unit for the marquee tournament.
Shastri’s positive outlook reflects the resilience and determination embedded in Indian cricket, setting the stage for an exciting journey towards future World Cup triumphs.
