Charlie Dean Joins RCB as Sophie Molineux Replacement in WPL 2025

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have confirmed England’s spin-bowling all-rounder Charlie Dean as the replacement for Sophie Molineux in their 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) squad. Molineux has been sidelined due to a persistent knee injury and will undergo surgery, which will keep her out of action for the foreseeable future.

Sophie Molineux’s Injury Struggles

Sophie Molineux has been battling ongoing knee issues for over a year. She had managed the injury during the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) in late 2024. However, the problem worsened during the ODI series against India earlier this year. She played two matches in the series, delivering 11 overs and taking one wicket, but her discomfort was evident.

Kate Beerworth, Australia’s team physiotherapist, confirmed that Molineux’s surgery is scheduled for this month. “Further updates on an anticipated return date will follow post-surgery,” Beerworth stated. This setback also kept Molineux out of the Ashes series and the New Zealand tour, adding to Australia’s challenges.

Before her injury, Molineux played a key role in RCB’s 2024 WPL title-winning campaign, taking 12 wickets at an average of 23.16 in 10 matches. Her absence is undoubtedly a blow to the team’s plans for the upcoming season.

Charlie Dean Steps In

Charlie Dean, an emerging star for England, is set to make her WPL debut with RCB. The 22-year-old has been impressive in international cricket, claiming 46 wickets in 36 T20Is at an outstanding average of 18.19. She has also contributed consistently in domestic tournaments, including The Hundred, where she represented London Spirit for four seasons starting in 2021.

Dean’s recent performances include her role in the Women’s Ashes, where she has shown promise despite limited opportunities. RCB’s management expressed confidence in Dean’s ability to fill Molineux’s shoes, citing her all-round skills and temperament as key assets.
