IPL 2025 has not been successful for star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. The LSG captain was out for a duck against his former team, Delhi Capitals, on Tuesday. Moreover, he batted at no. 7 due to an injury. Fans have accused him of ‘hiding’ behind uncapped players.
Asked to bat first at their home ground, the Lucknow Super Giants did a good job to set the foundation. They started well, thanks to powerful knocks from their openers. Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram set up a solid foundation as they stitched a partnership of 87 runs in 10 overs. However, with the fall of Markram, the innings never recovered.
In form batter Nicholas Pooran was dismissed for 9 runs by Mitchell Starc. Abdul Samad and David Miller did not have a great day either as they were dismissed for scores of 2 and 14 respectively. Due to a cameo from Ayush Badoni, LSG could post a total of 159. However, the biggest concern was their captain, Rishabh Pant, coming in to bat at No. 7 and being dismissed for a duck.
While the Lucknow Super Giants have had a decent season so far, it has not been the same for their captain. Rishabh Pant is going through a horrible season. The batter has scored 106 runs in 9 matches at an abysmal average of 13.25. He has a strike rate of less than 100 so far.
His performance might have forced Pant to demote himself as he came to bat at no. 7. Another reason could be an injury on his hand.
In an interview after the match, Pant said, “[The] idea was to capitalise. We sent [Abdul] Samad to capitalise on a wicket like that, but after that [David] Miller came in, and we just really got stuck in the wicket, but eventually these are the things we’ve got to figure out and try to find our best combination going forward.”
Rishabh Pant has come under fire for his poor performances. Fans on social media have taken it upon themselves to question the star player. Questions have been raised about his hefty price tag. Pant became the most expensive player in IPL ever with a price tag of INR 27 crore. His woeful performance with the bat and a lack of intent have not gone down well with the fans.
