Rohit Sharma stormed back into form with a blazing 70-run knock to guide Mumbai Indians to a comfortable win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 41 of IPL 2025. The veteran opener not only anchored MI’s chase but also shattered a massive franchise record, surpassing Kieron Pollard for the most sixes in Mumbai Indians history.
Rohit Sharma lit up the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium with a composed yet attacking innings of 70 off 46 balls. He struck three sixes in his knock, taking his overall tally of sixes for Mumbai Indians to 260 in 225 innings. By doing so, he overtook West Indies great Kieron Pollard, who had previously held the record with 258 sixes from 193 innings.
Sharma’s knock came at a crucial time for MI, who were chasing a modest target of 144. The opener’s calm approach and ability to find boundaries at regular intervals ensured that the chase never veered off track.
Rohit now leads a star-studded list of big-hitters in MI’s all-time ranks. Here’s how the top five stack up:
Rohit Sharma – 260 sixes (225 innings)
Kieron Pollard – 258 sixes (193 innings)
Suryakumar Yadav – 127 sixes (104 innings)
Hardik Pandya – 115 sixes (103 innings)
Ishan Kishan – 106 sixes (84 innings)
Pollard’s record stood firm for several seasons, but Rohit’s longevity and recent resurgence ensured his name now tops the list.
After the defeat, Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori conceded that his team misread the conditions. SRH opted to bat first, assuming a flat wicket, but found themselves struggling at 24/4 inside the powerplay.
“We thought it was a 250 wicket based on past matches, but the surface behaved differently. Our aggressive intent backfired,” Vettori said. “Once we lost quick wickets, it became very hard to set a competitive score.”
Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult made early breakthroughs with the new ball, leaving SRH with a massive rebuilding task they could never quite complete.
SRH’s reliance on openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma once again left them exposed. When the duo failed to deliver, the middle-order couldn’t respond with partnerships or acceleration.
“Our strength has been taking the game on early. But when that doesn’t work, we need others to step up. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen tonight,” Vettori admitted.
Despite some late resistance, SRH only managed 143/8 in their 20 overs. MI chased it down with ease, winning by 7 wickets and keeping their playoff hopes alive.
