Yograj Singh has stirred the pot once more. The former India cricketer, known for his outspoken views, made another bold statement—this time involving Arjun Tendulkar. Yograj believes that under the guidance of Yuvraj Singh, Arjun could evolve into the next Chris Gayle.

A couple of years ago, Arjun—son of cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar—trained under Yograj Singh after switching from Mumbai to Goa. The move paid off instantly, with Arjun smashing a century on his Ranji Trophy debut. Although the training period was short, Yograj thinks the youngster has immense potential if mentored properly.

“Focus less on his bowling and more on his batting,” Yograj told CricketNext. “If Yuvraj, who is very close to Sachin, trains Arjun for three months, he will become the next Chris Gayle. Many fast bowlers suffer stress fractures, which can limit their bowling. I feel Arjun should train with Yuvraj now.”

Arjun’s recent cricket journey

Arjun last played competitive cricket in December, representing Goa in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. A month earlier, he recorded his maiden five-wicket haul in First-Class cricket, picking up 5/25 against Arunachal Pradesh. He also impressed with figures of 4/81 against Sikkim.

Despite his domestic progress, Arjun’s IPL journey has seen mixed results. He played four matches for Mumbai Indians in 2023, taking three wickets. However, in 2024, he delivered two full-tosses against Nicholas Pooran, both of which were hit for sixes. Immediately afterward, he left the field due to an injury—later diagnosed as a stress fracture.

This recurring injury concern prompted Yograj’s comments, urging Yuvraj to step in and guide Arjun through a potential shift from pace bowling to explosive batting.

Yuvraj’s quiet influence

While Yuvraj Singh remains away from the limelight, his mentorship has helped shape the careers of rising stars like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma. Yograj believes that Arjun, with similar guidance, can find his own place in international cricket—possibly as a big-hitting batsman.
