Sanju Samson took his team to win against the Punjab Kings. With this, Samson has now won 32 games as the captain of the Rajasthan Royals. He surpassed late spin legend Shane Warne as the most successful captain for the team.
Sanju Samson has been a regular feature for the Rajasthan Royals for over a decade. In fact, the wicketkeeper-batsman made his debut against the Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab). He scored a half-century in his second match and became the youngest player to do so in IPL. Over the years, Samson has become a name associated with the Rajasthan Royals. For the two seasons where RR was banned from the tournament, Samson played for Delhi Capitals. He returned to the Rajasthan Royals in 2018 when RR was reinstated.
Samson made his captaincy debut in 2021. He took over the captaincy reigns from another Australian great, Steve Smith. In his first match as captain, he made a blistering century. He became the first player to do so in IPL.
Samson has won 32 out of 62 matches for RR in IPL. This takes him one ahead of Shane Warne’s record of 31 wins. He did so in 55 matches as the RR captain. Warne also won the first season of IPL for the Rajasthan Royals. In his 4 seasons as captain, Samson has been successful in taking Rajasthan to the IPL playoffs twice. In 2022 and 2024, Rajasthan Royals qualified for the playoffs. It remains to be seen what their fate will be in this season.
