Sri Lanka’s Danushka Gunathilaka suspended for six matches

Sri Lanka’s opening batsman Danushka Gunathilaka has been suspended for 6 matches by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for skipping the training session. After the late night partying, the cricket is alleged not to attend the practice session and hence, he has been charged with misconduct.

The incident had happened during India’s tour of Sri Lanka. There are reports that the cricketer had also turned up to a match day without his kit bag. Later, he did not take part in the ODI series due to a shoulder injury.

Cricbuzz reported that an SLC official revealed the news of the suspension. “The team management reported Danushka for breach of discipline and SLC took a decision to suspend him for six matches. We will make a formal announcement shortly,” the official said.

Danushka Gunathilaka was not selected in the Sri Lankan squad for the ODI series against Pakistan in UAE which came in as a surprise as he was in a good form prior to that but the Sri Lankan Board confirmed that his exclusion happened because of his indiscipline. The Lankan side is scheduled to play 5 ODIs after the completion of the ongoing 2-Test series against Pakistan.

A decent early international career

The left-hander had made his Test debut against India on the last tour and so far has played just the one Test. He had featured in 2 ODIs in the series that followed against India but missed out on the games that followed due to the shoulder injury.

His numbers in ODI cricket are decent so far. In 28 games that he has played for the country, he has scored 886 runs at an average of 32.81. The 26-year-old has notched up a century and 7 half-centuries as well. But his stats in the shortest format of the game aren’t as impressive. He has featured in 5 T2oIs so far in which he has scored 91 runs at an average of 18.2.
