Kolkata Knight Riders‘ star all-rounder Sunil Narine became the unfortunate owner of an unwanted record during his team’s IPL clash against Mumbai Indians. Narine’s dismissal for a duck against Jasprit Bumrah propelled him to the top of the unwanted list for most ducks in men’s T20 cricket.
A Night of Rain and Records at Eden Gardens
The rain-affected match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata witnessed not only a thrilling encounter but also a new record. Narine’s dismissal, a yorker with a hint of inswing from Bumrah, left him stranded at the crease, marking his 44th duck in T20 cricket. This surpassed the previous record held by English batsman Alex Hales, who has 43 ducks to his name. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan sits third on the list with 42 ducks.
While Narine now holds the unwanted record overall, the IPL has its own set of “duck specialists” when it comes to dismissals without scoring. In the IPL, Narine shares the record with Piyush Chawla, both with 16 ducks. Interestingly, the top three for most IPL ducks are all explosive batsmen – Dinesh Karthik, Glenn Maxwell, and Rohit Sharma – who each have 17 ducks in the league.
KKR’s Hard-fought Comeback
The rain played a significant role in the match, reducing it to a 16-over affair. Mumbai Indians won the toss and opted to field first. Their decision proved effective as they made early inroads with the dismissals of Phil Salt and Narine. KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer also fell cheaply, leaving his team in a precarious position at 45/3 after the powerplay.
Despite the early setbacks, KKR fought back with valuable contributions from Venkatesh Iyer (42), Nitish Rana (38), Andre Russell (24), Rinku Singh (23), and Ramandeep Singh (18). Their collective effort propelled KKR to a respectable total of 157/7.
