Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a massive heart attack while playing in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League on Monday. The incident occurred during the match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in Savar.
After experiencing severe chest discomfort, Tamim left the field and was immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Doctors later confirmed it was a major heart attack, and he is currently under observation on life support.
Tamim began feeling unwell shortly after taking the field and complained of chest pain. Medical staff quickly transported him to KPJ Specialised Hospital in Savar. They initially planned to airlift him to a hospital in Dhaka, but his condition worsened before they could move him, prompting doctors to treat him locally.
Dr Debashish Chowdhury, chief physician of the Bangladesh Cricket Board said, “He underwent initial checks at a local hospital, where mild heart issues were suspected.
Efforts were made to transport him to Dhaka, but on the way to the helipad, he experienced severe chest pain and had to be rushed back. Medical reports later confirmed it was a massive heart attack.”
“It is a difficult time for all of us. He is currently under observation, and the medical team is doing everything possible for his recovery,” he added.
Doctors carried out an angiogram and angioplasty procedure to remove a blockage from Tamim’s arteries. The operation went smoothly, and his condition stabilised.
However, he remains in critical care and is being closely monitored. The medical team praised the quick coordination between the match officials and hospital staff, which ensured Tamim received timely treatment.
Since retiring from international cricket in January 2025, Tamim had been active in domestic cricket and commentary. He is Bangladesh’s leading run-scorer across formats and one of the country’s most respected cricketers.
The cricketing community has been sending prayers and wishes for his speedy recovery.
