Chennai Super Kings have brought in a high-profile reinforcement mid-season. CSK have officially signed South African batting prodigy Dewald Brevis. He will feature as a replacement for the injured fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh. MS Dhoni-led side finds itself languishing at the bottom of the table with just two wins in seven matches.
Chennai Super Kings’ batting lineup has struggled to fire in unison this season. Apart from a few impactful innings from Rachin Ravindra and Shivam Dube, the team’s top and middle order have failed to deliver consistent performances. With captain Ruturaj Gaikwad already ruled out due to an elbow fracture and replaced by young batter Ayush Mhatre, CSK’s campaign has faced constant turbulence.
The addition of Dewald Brevis, a known T20 power-hitter, is being seen as a last-ditch effort to inject momentum into their faltering season.
Nicknamed “Baby AB” for his striking resemblance in batting style to AB de Villiers, 21-year-old Dewald Brevis brings raw power, innovation, and experience across multiple T20 leagues. His signing cost CSK INR 2.2 Crore, as per the official IPL release.
“Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa’s Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025,” stated the IPL in its announcement.
Brevis has played 81 T20 matches, amassing 1,787 runs including a record-breaking 162 off 57 balls in the CSA T20 Challenge—where he became the youngest South African to score a T20 century and the fastest batter to reach 150 in T20s, doing so in just 52 balls.
Format | Matches | Runs | Highest Score | T20I Caps |
---|---|---|---|---|
T20s | 81 | 1,787 | 162 | 2 |
The young batter’s global resume includes stints in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Major League Cricket (MLC), and SA20, where he was the sixth-highest run-scorer in the 2024 season with 291 runs at a staggering strike rate of 184.17, helping MI Cape Town clinch their maiden title.
Fueling fan speculation, Brevis posted a cryptic yellow-themed image on Instagram just hours before the official announcement, hinting at his move to CSK. His addition is expected to bolster the middle order and potentially provide an explosive partnership with the likes of Shivam Dube and Ravindra Jadeja.
Earlier this season, CSK lost their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad to a severe elbow injury. His absence left a massive void in the leadership and opening combination. Mumbai U-19 batter Ayush Mhatre was drafted in as his replacement.
