Bangladesh cricket great Tamim Iqbal has shown signs of improvement after undergoing heart surgery, but doctors remain cautious as the next 48 to 72 hours are crucial for his recovery. The former Bangladesh captain suffered a cardiac arrest during a Dhaka Premier League match between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Shine Pukur at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP), leading to an emergency hospitalization and surgery.
Tamim, who was rushed to the hospital immediately after collapsing on the field, underwent an angiogram procedure to address a blockage in one of his heart’s arteries. The surgery was successful, and he has started walking, as confirmed by medical professionals attending to him.
Professor Abu Jafar, Director General of the Health Directorate, provided an update on his condition.
“Tamim’s condition is improving, and he has started walking a little. However, the next 48 to 72 hours remain critical. He must wait at least three months before resuming normal activities, including sports,” said Jafar, as per Cricbuzz.
Professor Abdul Wadud, Director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, emphasized that while initial signs are positive, risks remain.
“His heart function appears normal, but we must remain cautious. Abnormal rhythms could still occur. We have advised against immediate movement. While Tamim’s condition has improved, a sudden deterioration cannot be ruled out. It is crucial to minimize exertion and maintain strict monitoring,” Wadud explained.
Tamim, who retired from international cricket in January 2025 before the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, shared an emotional message on Facebook, thanking his supporters.
“We live due to heartbeat, but this heartbeat can stop without any announcement, and we tend to forget that often. Ahead of starting my activities yesterday, did I know what was going to happen to me?” he wrote.
“By the grace of Allah and blessings of everyone, I returned and am fortunate that I got some good people during this time of crisis. Through their wisdom and relentless hard work, I overcame this crisis. Some incidents make us realize the reality and how small this life is. In this small life, whatever we can do or not, everyone should stand beside each other, and this is my little request. I am extremely grateful to everyone for their love. Everyone should keep me and my family in your prayers because, without your love, Tamim Iqbal is no one.”
Tamim Iqbal remains one of Bangladesh’s greatest-ever cricketers, having scored over 15,000 international runs across formats. The left-handed batter played 243 ODIs, 70 Tests, and 78 T20Is for Bangladesh, registering 25 centuries—the most by any Bangladesh player.
The 35-year-old last represented Bangladesh in September 2023 in a home series against New Zealand. Despite retiring from international cricket earlier this year, he continued playing in domestic competitions before his recent health setback.
Tamim will continue to receive medical care under strict supervision, with doctors monitoring his progress closely. While he has begun walking, full recovery will take time, and he is expected to remain out of action for at least three months.
As Bangladesh cricket fans await further updates, prayers and wishes continue to pour in for the veteran cricketer’s speedy recovery.
