In a historic moment for Indian cricket, Rajasthan Royals introduced 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi to the grand stage of the Indian Premier League, making him the youngest player to debut in the tournament’s history.
The teenager, born on March 27, 2011, took the field against Lucknow Super Giants in Jaipur, stepping in for skipper Sanju Samson who was ruled out due to injury.
Vaibhav’s debut has set a unique precedent—he is the first IPL player born after the tournament’s inception in 2008. With this appearance, he surpassed all previous records for the youngest debutant in the league.
The youngster has already built a reputation in India’s domestic youth circuit. At just 12 years and 284 days, he became the youngest player to debut in the Ranji Trophy. His consistent performances in age-group cricket caught the attention of scouts and led to a competitive bid at the IPL 2025 mega auction. Rajasthan Royals eventually secured him for Rs 1.10 crore, outbidding Delhi Capitals.
Vaibhav’s breakout moment came during the 2024 U19 Test series where he smashed the fastest century by an Indian in the format—reaching triple figures in just 58 balls. Only Moeen Ali has scored a quicker U19 hundred globally.
Hailing from Samastipur, Bihar, Vaibhav first turned heads during the Cooch Behar Trophy where he scored a blistering 151 against Jharkhand. He also featured in the U19 quadrangular series with notable contributions against top youth sides from England and Bangladesh.
Vaibhav’s father, visibly emotional after his son’s debut, recalled the trials that landed him the IPL spot. “Rajasthan Royals called him for trials in Nagpur. Vikram Rathour sir set a task to score 17 runs in an over. Bituwa smashed three sixes straightaway. In the entire trial, he hit eight sixes and four boundaries. He used to love cartoons like Doremon, but now it’s just cricket.”
Rajasthan Royals have long been known for nurturing raw talent, and their latest bet on Vaibhav Suryavanshi signals a bold commitment to the future of Indian cricket.
With Sanju Samson likely to be out for a few games, fans can expect more opportunities for the young sensation. And with his fearless attitude and natural flair, Vaibhav could soon become a household name in Indian cricket.
