Mumbai Indians (MI) have faced a challenging start to the IPL 2024 season, suffering three consecutive defeats before bouncing back with two wins. As they prepare to face defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium, their bowling coach Lasith Malinga has highlighted a significant issue in the team’s composition.
In a net session ahead of the crucial clash, MI’s bowling all-rounder Arjun Tendulkar showcased his skills by delivering two consecutive yorkers to strike the single stump. While Arjun’s performance impressed many, Malinga expressed concern over the team’s reliance on pace bowlers.
In a video shared on Mumbai’s official social media page, Malinga can be seen reacting to Arjun’s deliveries. He pointed out, “Too many pace bowlers,” indicating a potential imbalance in the squad.
MI’s bowling attack has heavily relied on pace bowlers in IPL 2024, with only five spin bowlers featuring in the playing XI so far. The spinners have collectively bowled just 23 overs, picking up three wickets. Piyush Chawla has been the main spin option for MI, picking two wickets in 10 overs across four matches.
On the other hand, MI’s pacers have been more impactful, picking up 25 wickets at an economy rate of 9.87. Jasprit Bumrah has been a standout performer, claiming 10 wickets in five innings at an impressive economy rate of under a run-a-ball. His recent five-wicket haul against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) highlighted his match-winning capabilities.
Despite his promising performances, Arjun Tendulkar has yet to make his first appearance for MI in IPL 2024. In the previous season, he played four matches for the side, picking three wickets and scoring 13 runs. The clash between MI and CSK promises to be an exciting encounter, with both teams eager to secure a crucial victory in the IPL 2024 season.
