Following his impressive performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Yashasvi Jaiswal may soon make his ODI debut for India.
The young left-hander, who dazzled with the bat during the Test series against Australia, is reportedly in line for a place in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against England and the Champions Trophy in 2025. While nothing is confirmed yet, a report from Rev Sports suggests Jaiswal is likely to be included as a backup opener.
Consistent Performances in Tests
Jaiswal’s recent exploits in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have made him hard to ignore. The 23-year-old finished the series as the second-highest run-scorer, amassing 391 runs in five Tests. His standout knock came in Perth, where he smashed a stunning 161 in India’s second innings to help secure a commanding 295-run victory.
Although he struggled in the following two Tests, he bounced back during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. Jaiswal scored 82 and 84 in the match, keeping India in contention until his dismissal turned the tide in Australia’s favour.
Stellar List A Record
Jaiswal’s credentials in the 50-over format also make a strong case for his selection. In 32 List A matches, he has scored 1511 runs at an impressive average, including three centuries and 17 half-centuries. His highest score of 203 highlights his ability to play long innings, which could be crucial for India in high-stakes tournaments like the Champions Trophy.
India’s Likely Opening Pair
If selected, Jaiswal will serve as a backup to India’s first-choice opening duo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The experienced Sharma is expected to lead the side in the Champions Trophy, while Gill has established himself as a reliable opener in white-ball cricket.
New Vice-Captain on the Cards
India are also expected to have a new vice-captain for the Champions Trophy. According to reports, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be appointed as Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the marquee event. The 31-year-old fast bowler has previously served as vice-captain during the ODI series against South Africa in 2022 but has never led the team in the 50-over format.
Bumrah’s leadership experience includes stints as captain in Tests and T20Is. He led India to victory in the opening game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, although the team eventually lost the five-match series 1-3.
Champions Trophy: A Hybrid Model
The 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy will feature eight top cricketing nations battling across 15 matches. The tournament will follow a hybrid model, with games scheduled in both Pakistan and the UAE. India’s matches will primarily take place in Dubai, including the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on February 23 at the Dubai International Stadium.
Depending on India’s progression, the final could be held in either Dubai or Lahore, promising high drama and excitement for fans worldwide.
