The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to revolutionize player compensation, this time with the introduction of the “Test Cricket Incentive Scheme.” This scheme aims to financially incentivize participation in the longest format of the game by rewarding players based on the number of Tests they play in a season.
Financial Rewards for Commitment to Test Cricket
Following India’s convincing 4-1 Test series victory over England, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced the groundbreaking initiative. “I am pleased to announce the initiation of the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for Senior Men,” Shah declared on social media platform X. “This is a step aimed at providing financial growth and stability to our esteemed athletes.”
The scheme offers a significant financial boost on top of the existing match fees for Test cricket, which currently stand at INR 15 lakh per match. Players who participate in more than half (50%) of the Tests in a season will receive an additional INR 30 lakh per match. This incentive increases further for players featuring in over 75% of matches, who will earn an extra INR 45 lakh per match.
Non-Playing Members Included
The scheme acknowledges the contributions of non-playing members who are part of the Test squad. These members, crucial for team preparation and support, will receive 50% of the additional match payments awarded to their playing counterparts based on participation slabs.
The “Test Cricket Incentive Scheme” is a strategic move by the BCCI to address the growing popularity of shorter formats like T20 cricket. By offering substantial financial rewards for consistent participation in Test matches, the BCCI hopes to attract and retain top talent in the longer format, ensuring a strong and competitive Indian Test team.
Increased Earnings Potential for Players
Previously, a player selected in the playing XI for a Test match received only the INR 15 lakh match fee, along with their annual central retainer contract. The new scheme offers players the opportunity to significantly increase their earnings, particularly for those who might fall under a lower bracket in the retainer system. This additional income potential serves as a strong incentive for continued dedication to Test cricket.
The BCCI’s “Test Cricket Incentive Scheme” is a welcome development for Test cricket enthusiasts in India. By financially rewarding players for their commitment to the five-day format, the scheme has the potential to ensure a bright future for Test cricket in the country.
