Following Chennai Super Kings’ fifth consecutive loss in IPL 2025, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has raised tough questions about MS Dhoni’s future and CSK’s decision-making — sparking speculation that this could be Dhoni’s final season.
CSK slumped to a crushing 8-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk, registering their heaviest defeat in terms of balls remaining and their lowest home total ever (103/9).
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Kaif questioned whether it’s time for CSK to begin a new chapter, and slammed the team management for preparing a slow pitch against a spin-heavy KKR lineup.
“Is this Dhoni’s last season? The way CSK’s season is going, is the time right for a change? Last question: Why give a slow pitch at home when the rivals have spinners like Narine and Varun?” Kaif posted.
The tweet has sparked debate among fans and pundits alike, with Dhoni’s future now a hot topic as CSK languishes near the bottom of the table.
MS Dhoni, who returned as captain after Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out with injury, acknowledged in the post-match presentation that CSK lacked partnerships and failed to apply themselves in key moments.
“We never got any partnerships… more application and we would be fine,” Dhoni said.
He also pointed out the importance of not panicking based on the scoreboard, especially given CSK’s current struggles to post competitive totals.
“We need to back our strengths, play authentic cricket shots, and not get desperate,” he added.
This is the first time in CSK’s history that they’ve lost five matches in a row in a single IPL season. The defeat against KKR has raised serious concerns about the team’s balance, intent, and preparation.
While fans continue to back Dhoni’s legacy, many are now wondering — will IPL 2025 be the final chapter in the MS Dhoni story?
