In a major blow to Gujarat Titans, New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips has exited the IPL 2025 season after suffering a groin injury. The 28-year-old has flown back to New Zealand following the injury sustained during GT’s away match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 6.

Though Phillips has not featured in any of GT’s matches this season, his departure has raised concerns over the team’s overseas player depth. The franchise officially confirmed the news after reports surfaced about his sudden exit from the squad.

“Glenn Phillips has returned to New Zealand following a groin injury he sustained during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6. Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery,” the Titans stated in an official release.

Star Performer Misses Out After Champions Trophy Heroics

Phillips was a standout performer for New Zealand during the Champions Trophy, showcasing remarkable athleticism and acrobatic fielding. Known for his explosive batting and sharp presence on the field, he was picked by Gujarat Titans at his base price during the IPL 2025 auction.

His absence will be felt by the Titans, who are now left with only five overseas players in their current squad — Jos Buttler, Sherfane Rutherford, Rashid Khan, Gerald Coetzee, and Karim Janat. Each franchise is allowed a total of eight foreign players, and it is unclear whether GT will seek an immediate replacement for Phillips.

Gujarat Titans: Top of the Table Despite Setbacks

Despite these setbacks, Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans are enjoying a strong campaign. With four wins in five matches, they sit atop the IPL 2025 points table with 8 points. Their only loss came in the season opener against Punjab Kings.

GT have since bounced back with dominant wins over Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals.

However, the team also had to deal with another overseas exit as Kagiso Rabada returned to South Africa for personal reasons. No official update has been provided on Rabada’s return.

What’s Next for Gujarat Titans?

GT will face Lucknow Super Giants on Saturday, April 12, in another away fixture. With Glenn Phillips now unavailable and Rabada absent, team management may need to rethink their squad balance moving forward.
