The BCCI has announced a fresh-faced Indian squad, led by Shubman Gill, for the forthcoming five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. This tour, kicking off in the first week of July, marks Gill’s maiden leadership role for the national team. While his stint as Gujarat Titans captain in the IPL 2024 may not have yielded the desired results, he now has a chance to prove his mettle on the international stage.
The most striking aspect of the announced squad is the inclusion of five uncapped players: Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Tushar Deshpande, and Dhruv Jurel. Among them, Jurel is the sole player with prior India experience, having made his red-ball debut against England earlier this year. However, all five players have impressed with consistent performances in the recently concluded IPL 2024, earning them this well-deserved call-up.
The BCCI selectors have clearly placed emphasis on rewarding recent IPL form. Parag, with his explosive batting at number four for Rajasthan Royals, and Sharma, who impressed with his opening partnership for Sunrisers Hyderabad, are exciting prospects. Reddy, a batting allrounder , Deshpande, a right-arm seamer who plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL, and Jurel, a talented wicket-keeper batsman, add further depth and variety to the squad.
This Zimbabwe series will be the first assignment for the Indian team after the ongoing T20 World Cup. A cloud of uncertainty hangs over the coaching staff, with Rahul Dravid‘s tenure as head coach set to conclude after the World Cup. The BCCI has yet to announce his replacement, leaving questions unanswered about the team’s leadership structure beyond the playing XI.
