Cricket South Africa has banned domestic team Warriors for failing to meet the board’s selection guidelines in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One. Reportedly, the Warriors fielded fewer than the required number of black African players in the playing XI in the match against Dolphins and violated the quota policy.
As per the Cricket South Africa (CSA) quota rule, for domestic competitions teams are required to include at least six players of colour in their playing XI, with a minimum of three black African players. This is to promote diversity in domestic and international cricket.
For the national team, however, the quota policy has slightly different rules. It’s a must to include at least six players of colour but the requirement for black African players is reduced to two. This target is measured as an average over the course of the season, and it is not considered mandatory for each individual match.
According to a report by Wisden, Warriors lost a place in the knock-out stage of the One-Day Cup because of their faulty selection that didn’t match the quota policy. They failed to meet the selection guidelines of CSA during their match against Dolphins on February 16 at Kingsmead Stadium, Durban, on 16 February in the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division One.
CSA docked five points that the Warriors had earned for their win in that fixture, including a bonus point. So, Despite a strong league-stage campaign and finishing third on the Points Table last week, the team has now been demoted to fourth position following the penalty. There is no chance of the Warriors qualifying for the play-offs now. As a result, the Dolphins got four points for the match. This also means they will now take on the Titans in the upcoming play-off clash.
