Lucknow Super Giants’ young spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi is back in the headlines. The leg-spinner faced BCCI’s wrath again for his wicket celebration. This time, Sunil Gavaskar isn’t happy.
Digvesh Rathi has become known for his unique “notebook celebration.” After taking a wicket, he mimics writing in a notebook. While the move excited fans, it didn’t go well with the officials.
The first incident happened against Punjab Kings. Rathi celebrated right in front of Priyansh Arya after dismissing him. The action was seen as a send-off. He received a 25% match fee fine and one demerit point.
Rathi repeated the celebration against Mumbai Indians’ Naman Dhir. However, this time, he kept his distance from the batter. Despite that, he was fined again. This time, the BCCI charged him 50% of his match fee.
Sunil Gavaskar questioned the decision. “The first time, Rathi got into the batter’s space. That was wrong. But in the second case, he celebrated from a distance. He didn’t invade anyone’s space,” Gavaskar wrote in his Mid-Day column.
After facing two fines, Rathi changed his celebration slightly. Instead of doing it in the batter’s face, he now “writes” on the grass. This subtle change seems to have worked. The BCCI hasn’t fined him for this version yet.
Rathi has performed well for LSG. He has taken 8 wickets in 6 matches. His best figures are 2/30 against Punjab Kings. He has picked at least one wicket in every match.
Many fans support Rathi’s passion. They feel the celebration adds excitement. But they also call for consistency in penalties.
The debate continues. Should players be allowed to celebrate freely? Or must they follow strict guidelines? For now, Rathi continues to bowl well and celebrate carefully.
